weekend sparkle

weekend sparkle

i receive a lot of questions about the name of my blog and why i chose it. i wanted to choose something that encompassed both the tangible and intangible. often, i would describe someone, something, an event in my life or a feeling as: sparkly.

it’s that intangible feeling, moment or magic. i recently found this quote and it partly put into words why i started this blog. and on a lighter note, i just really like pretty things!

“We need less posturing and more genuine charisma. Charisma was originally a religious term, meaning “of the spirit” or “inspired”. It’s about letting the light of a higher power shine through us. It’s about a sparkle in people that money can’t buy. It’s an invisible energy with visible effects. To let go, to just love, is not to fade into the wallpaper. Quite the contrary, it’s when we truly become bright. We’re letting our own light shine.”

have a sparkly weekend! x

fashion friday: the investment bag

the investment bag

when i turned thirty last year (eep!), i splurged on what i term as ‘the investment bag’. it was a gift to myself i felt was deserved for the milestone. the louis vuitton tote style bag (aka the ‘neverfull’) was one that i had eyed for years. like so many gals in their late teens/early 20′s with limited funds but a hunger for style, i was guilty of buying a replica vuitton. having the means to treat myself to the real deal was exactly that: a treat and a symbolic ‘i made it’ moment.

my definition of an investment bag: classic, never trendy, fits in with your day-to-day wardrobe (cost per wear!), will only get better with age, somewhat practical (i stuff mine full for plane and moped rides), luxurious, and lastly: always makes an outfit special. it’s an investment into your personal style.

these picks are the investment bags that i have been coveting for years. the chanel bag is at the top of my list – finding one at a consignment store would be a dream!

how to: concealer

how to concealer

like many of you, i’m always looking for the perfect concealer formula to hide dark circles. my professional kit is stocked full of items that didn’t work so well. how many times does it happen: you’ve tried it in the store but after you bring it home, you find out that the product you over-spent on… under-delivers.

save your money and give my concealing system and product suggestions a go… basically, i’ve spent the money so you don’t have to!

colour correction: this is the first thing to consider. always look for an undereye concealer with a peach undertone, as this will counter act the purple undertone on which most dark circles are based. some of my faves: benefit, laura mercier, bobbi brown and the balm.

application:

  • start with clean hands. using your fingers allows greater control and less product waste (brushes and sponges suck up a lot of that precious product!). this also warms up and emulsifies the concealer.
  • using your ring finger, dab (do not rub) the concealer from the inner corner, downwards, in the hollow of the eye (where most dark circles are concentrated). pressing the product into the skin as opposed to smearing it on will help it stick to where it needs to.
  • continue dabbing the concealer over the rest of the under-eye. you may even need another coat which is best applied at the end of your makeup routine followed by…

the trick: a light reflecting product is your secret weapon. yves st. laurent makes the uber popular touche eclat which i recommend.

  • the trick is to ONLY use this in the darkest areas/hollows since this is where you want the light to reflect… not all over the under-eye. clarins makes one similar one. BONUS: they also diffuse the appearance of fine lines!

set: to keep the concealer from creasing as much as possible (all concealer will crease throughout the day), set it with a little translucent powder. skip this step if you’ve used a light reflecting product as described above since the dull powder will cancel out any of those reflecting properties.

it’s to die for: {the sparkle} feature

its to die for

great food is something i’m passionate about; sometimes, the term ‘foodie’ is putting it mildly. as erin ireland says “why waste calories on food that isn’t ‘to die for’?” and i would tend to agree… perhaps this like way of thinking is why we connected right away! i’ve featured this lovely and influential vancouver food reporter on {the sparkle} back at start up – not only does she know her ‘to die for’ food – she is insanely stylish.

erin asked to feature my “to die for face” in an article all about the food i die for in vancouver. i was honoured and didn’t miss a beat grabbing a thomas haas almond double baked croissant to evoke the reaction. check out the full feature by clicking the photo above!

(if you are looking for spots in vancouver to try out, check my restaurant picks. these are vetted by me and in no way am i paid to endorse anything i recommend. as i find the best spots, the lists are updated so keep an eye out for new additions!)

p.s: have you seen this “sh!t foodies say” video yet?! it’s really hilarious – from my boyfriend’s mouth: “did you write this script?”.

frosting a cake

the weekend is a great time to attempt those special projects we don’t have time for during the week. especially when it’s cold, i like to get bags full of groceries and spend solid time in the kitchen. these (mostly sweet) picks will definitely keep you on your toes:

this glitzy trifle will add serious sparkle to your dinner party

a caesar dressing worthy of an addition to your recipe book

so THIS is how you frost a cake like a pro!

coral, peach, tangerine, salmon; it’s everywhere for spring 2012! (according to pantone, it’s the colour of 2012). if you can believe it, spring is just around the corner – why not spruce up your wardrobe with a fresh zing to bring you into the season? pair it with a turquoise piece of jewelry and you’re like a walking holiday.

1. cross body satchel, asos // 2. t-shirt, splendid // 3. shift dress, madewell // 4. dress, j. crew // 5. jeans, asos // 6. bubble necklace, j. crew // 7. jeans, madewell // 8. cushion studs, baublebar // 9. silk top, madewell // 10. ballet flats, j. crew

defining your decorating style

classic airy

decorating is a pleasure of mine and although i don’t believe in trends when it comes to my space, i do believe in updating your space when it’s stale and building your decor slowly over time. it takes a great deal of patience to look for the perfect pieces (that don’t cost a fortune!) and not just to go to ikea and buy up a room stage.

my boyfriend is moving into my apartment in the next few months, and we’ll be decorating our bedroom; i’m seeking inspiration for our new space. he’s made it clear that he’s not into the super fem styles, but i think a few of these rooms have a good mix of masculine thrown in. as we choose our pieces, we’re learning compromise…

the first item we have purchased is a cowhide rug for the bedroom similar to this one. i’m very excited to throw it down!

my favorite bedroom is the one i’ve labeled ‘classic & airy’, above. which is yours?
